Perhaps I should begin by telling you how not to make
candles! On Samhain, 1997, I decided to make some black candles to
put inside my pumpkins which were carved and ready to be set out on the
front porch. I had been melting my wax in glass jars with no
handles. Very silly of me not to invest in the metals pitchers with
plastic handles which are sold for that purpose. To make a
long story short, I didn't realize how hot the jar with melted wax was and
it slipped from my hand. Hot black wax was everywhere! My wood
floor, white wooden kitchen cabinets, the stove, counter top!!! It
took days to clean up! Later that year I had the floor
refinished, but I can still see some stains on the cabinets near the
floor. So, I think that I shall begin with equipment!

Equipment
 |
1-3 heavy-duty saucepans, 6-8" in height.
It's fine to begin experimenting making one batch of candles at a
time. However, once you really get into it, you'll want to make
several colors at a time.
 |
1-3 aluminum pitchers (craft stores). Here again I've
found that one is just not enough. I like to use three:
one for white and cream colored candles; one for blues & greens
& black; and a third for pinks, reds, and violets.
 |
candle wicking with metallic center (craft stores
carry them on a roll so they can be cut to size)
 |
herbs
 |
oils
 |
candle holders, aluminum cans (without rings), an
assortment of plastic candle molds (craft stores).
 |
an assortment of colored beeswax sheets (I purchase
them by the box from I.A. Root which can be found on the web under
Yankee Candle Company. They also sell inexpensive candle holders.)
 |
a pair of scissors
 |
sheets of newspaper or cardboard (from the candle wax
boxes) or heavy plastic sheeting or old plastic tablecloths to use as
a working area.
 |
inexpensive wooden chopsticks from an oriental grocery
store, or left-overs from a Chinese or Japanese restaurant.
 |
a stove!!!

Instructions
 |
Begin by cleaning your work area and creating sacred
space. You need not, but may draw a circle.
 |
Prepare the surface of your work area by covering it
with one of the above-mentioned.
 |
Have all your ingredients at hand. The first time, try
making just one or two candles. Be sure you pick a day and time when
you won't be disturbed.
 |
Fill your saucepan(s) half full of hot water &
bring to a rolling boil.
 |
Meanwhile, open your wax and tear the sheets into
small strips, about 2" wide & tear those in half in the other
direction.
 |
Place in one of the metallic pitchers, place in water,
reduce heat to a simmer. Be careful that the pitcher contains enough
wax so that it isn't floating in the water. As the wax melts,
add more wax.
 |
While the wax is melting, cut wicks 1" longer
than the container you choose to use. Place the wick in the container.
With chopsticks, prop up the wick placing one stick on each side so it
stays in the middle. Simply press the sticks together. If using
plastic molds, cut wicks 2" longer, insert the wick through the
hole, leaving an inch sticking through. Remember, this will be
the top of your candle. Place the chopsticks at the other end
using the above method.
 |
When wax is completely melted, add whatever herbs or
oils you have decided to use.
 |
Slowly and carefully, pour the wax down one side of
the container, leaving some space at the top. Air bubbles often
burst at the top after a few minutes. Wait 5 minutes and pour a small
amount of wax on top just to top it off. Readjust the wick if it has
moved & allow to cool. If using plastic, or a metal
can, there is usually no need to top off in the above manner. Do
move the wick around a bit to remove some of the bubbles. You
will be turning the candle over anyway and the bottom will not show.
Place plastic containers and metal cans in the refrigerator after they
are cool. They will contract and make removal easier.
 |
Store candles in a cool area until ready for use.
 |
See candle
magick for use of candles.

*Caution!! Candle Wax is EXTREMELY hot! Always use
caution!
